My friends we think our life is hard now, think if we had to live in 1881. Their constant struggle for survival lasted from sunup to sundown, lacking our modern conveniences they leaned on each other for strength and endurance and they prayed that someone would hear them in their hour of need. It was either feast or famine for these individuals and as I read this novel, I felt their thirst for rain and their desire for the sun to shine down as the rains finally pounded upon their fields. These individuals were strong, they did not give up hope and drown themselves in despair when things were falling apart, no, they knew that things eventually would turn themselves around for they just had to wait it out. I am not the most patient person and reading this novel about this era, really put things in perspective for me. It would be a struggle for me to handle what Sarah did, living off the land and living day-by-day like she did.
I really enjoyed this novel, more than I anticipated. The novel moves quickly and after the first fifty pages I thought to myself, if all this happened already, I can’t image what the rest of the novel holds for me. I loved the language of this novel; it was rich and tells the true quality of the individuals as they resided in the Rio Grande. Sarah is one girl who can hold her own. She believes in herself and her own abilities. When she speaks about going into labor, I couldn’t quit laughing. She was honest and speaks her mind. Sarah finds out what an education really means and I loved those moments. This novel is truly remarkable and one that I will definitely be rereading. I highly recommend you find yourself a copy and absorb yourself into the life of Sarah, it’s quite an adventure.
