I had no idea this book was so exhilarating. But a goblin boy, bad men and possession, this book was deeper than I expected. The opening scene of a fire consuming their home was written so beautifully if ever a disturbing scene can be written. So powerful and dramatic, the family escaping as “the dragon” unleashes its power on their home- a pivotal point in the book. The nightmares begin, the visions, an asthma attack takes place although all signs point that it was not an attack. Escaping to their holiday home, the family finds shelter there. You can feel the disharmony, their fragileness, and the emptiness as the family tries to rebuild amongst the dust. Its eerie how little Dee can’t sleep, crying all night long afraid of the bad man who walks in her bad dreams, who she claims, is coming to take her away. The two boys Pat and Dom sleep together in one room and it’s Dom who is having issues. Goblin boy talks to Dom yet he has no recollection of talking to him although Pat sees them together. Perhaps they’re all going crazy like their Nan who lives with them. Wanting to take Dom back to his room one night when Pat catches Dom and Goblin boy, with his black teeth and white lips talking in the garden, Goblin boy pulls Dom into the forest. I knew this wasn’t going to be good, as a tired soldier steps out and he’s the bad man from the dreams. Soon there are only 3 people standing where once 4 stood, Goblin boy has disappeared. Seriously?! the Goblin boy entered Dom. This is only the beginning and the story takes off with interesting twists and turns. Pat just wants his brother back and the Goblin boy, he is searching for something else.
