Sweethearts, yes I saw this book and I though ah, a great book about romance, love and hey look, there’s a heart sugar cookie on the front. Sign me up and bring on the passion! If only it were this easy. Unfortunately, I don’t have much to say about this book except it had potential. Jennifer and Cameron were best friends as children. They had a lot in common, they took care of each other and he made her feel special. He was her protector as they did everything together. Cameron has issues at home which Jennifer knows something about but not to the extreme as they were really happening. During fifth grade, Cameron starts missing more school and then suddenly, he’s gone. No phone call, no letter, he just vanishes. Jennifer’s family moves, she changes her name and she changes her whole personality – just like that. I find this totally amazing that she does this. She is so heartbroken over losing Cameron and to combat this, she tries to change herself and be someone totally different. Don’t her parents see this and wonder what is going on? Anyway, now Jennifer is Jenna and she has moments where her old self pokes itself out and she has to push it away. Really, how sad is that? She has to be happy and jolly all the time, popular and self-assured to uphold her image, for what, I am thinking. She thinks her life is better and on track and she has a new boyfriend and some new friends now. It’s her birthday though and she gets a card in the mail and someone is back. It’s Cameron. Oh, the questions I had and Cameron was taking his time answering them. Jenna thought she was a new person but Cameron caused a lot of issues and emotions for everyone in Jenna’s life. Lots of potential in this story but the characters fell flat for me, I just didn’t feel any emotional connection to them and I didn’t get any well-rounded characters. I felt a loss when Cameron left Jennifer for about half a page and then she changed her life and she moved on. There weren’t these fantastic flashbacks to make me feel emotional and heartfelt as Jenna started her new life. The book laid out the story for what it was. I’m sorry but I was just not feeling it.
