There was much more inside this book than I ever imagined. Inside these pages contained a complex story drenched in graphic history. Seventeen-year old Gretchen believed in the National Socialist Party, she believed in her families past, she believed in her uncle, the man who was like a father to her, Adolf Hitler. It was the beginning of his regime and Gretchen’s father gave up his life for Adolf. Gretchen’s world was full of love and innocence and she knew nothing else. When Gretchen meets a Jewish reporter, her life turns upside down and as I read, I could feel her life changing. Things that she was once so sure of, she questioned. It was as if her eyes were opened and Anne’s words had finally hit her. I enjoyed reading all the history that Anne included in the novel. The attention to details was extended to include simple issues as well as the complex matters that were happening during this time period. The characters and the interactions between them were dynamic and powering making this book a terrific read.
