My Never Ending List

The Book of Lies

The Book of Lies - Brad Meltzer

I really didn’t know what to expect when walking into The Book of Lies but after reading about a fourth of the book, I thought I was reading a spin off on the DeVanci Code.  Now, I had a hard time getting into that book and I hate to say it, but I liked the movie better than the book with all the conspiracy theories thrown in there so I was getting a bit nervous about reading this book.  The Book of Lies opens up with Cal witnessing his father accidently killing his mother, he ends up doing time in prison.  Cal pretty much writes his father out of his life and years later, he receives a call to pick up a homeless man in the park who’s down with a gunshot wound. The guys name is Lloyd, Cal’s father.  Daddy has returned home but it’s not quite the homecoming you’d expect after 19 years.  Lloyd was supposed to be making a delivery but something went down.  Ellis wants that delivery and he’s adamant on getting it.  The demands from the prophet and the Judge keep him moving forward.   Reluctant to help his father, Cal and his small team of lone wolves band together to investigate why this delivery is so important.   Other individuals join in the search and before long, biblical connections are made, Superman is a hot topic, tattoos are revealed, and I threw my previous assumptions away.

I’m sure glad I had my paper handy on this book with all the different individuals trying to uncover the mystery of the cargo that Lloyd was delivering.   The idea of Cain and Abel from the Bible was an interesting theory and to mix that with Superman and the other conceptions, boy sometimes when authors throw those ideas in; I have to wonder where they come up with such original insight.  To connect all the different facades that were contained under this one book jacket took some ingenuity.  As the characters popped in and out of scenes, they eluded me at times but what they were after was all the same.  The ending was not what I expected, yet the pieces were all laid out had I just stepped back and looked.
