I tried to love it, I did and perhaps if I knew more about the Odyssey, I could like it but this book failed me. I started to enjoy the story and the characters but all the connections to the Odyssey, sorry…you lost me and I lost my flow in the story. I was totally confused when the book was over. By the time I finished, I was wondering what I had just read and what the point of the story really was. Perhaps if I had read the Odyssey before reading this novel, I could have followed this modern version and if that’s the case, there should have been a blurb on the front cover of the book stating, “must enjoy the Odyssey or must know something about Homer’s 457 page book before reading this” because had I know that, I would have never read this.
Anyways, I stuck with it and I’m giving it 2.5 stars as I thought the story had potential and I liked the giants and how Pen dragged everyone around like she was this high official or something. Pen was actually on a journey trying to find her parents after the big Earth Shake. It’s a good thing that her dad was a planner and had some supplies stocked in the basement in case of an emergency as that is what seventeen-year old Pen survives on while she holes up in her house with her dog. She fears the rest of her family is dead after the Earth Shake. After some men break into her house, she is on the run and she meets up with Hex. Oh, there are giants and Pen is a badass when dealing with these giants. I want this girl on my team if I get into trouble. Hex is with a group of people and they are also trying to survive after the Earth Shake but they have van to get them places so they are on the move. Hex and Pen have some chemistry between them but they have some issues they need to deal with first. Imagine an Earth Shake with giants and individuals trying to survive and you have yourself Love in the Time of the Global Warming. Great cover just not my type of book.
