I fell in love with the cover, the innocence that this girl portrayed and the simplicity that I believed she conveyed with her hair cascading over her face. Boy, was I wrong. Bee was a deep character that I just could not get enough of. An orphan, Bee travels with Pauline living out of the backend of a pickup truck, cooking hotdogs with the circus. Using her hair and Pauline as shields, Bee hides her diamond which others so desperately want to see. It is this diamond, this birthmark that causes Bee to be a different person than the one she might be. When Bee is forced to leave the circus, taking her dog and a pig, she is looking for a permanent home. Something she has never had but has been looking for, forever. What Bee finds, is a dream. Part reality and part imagination. The challenges that Bee faces and the excitement of her future make this book a great read.
The pace of the book was quick and there were many adventures to keep you engaged. Being raised around a circus, Bee was exposed to a lot of individuals hence she knew more about the world than most children her age. When she leaves the circus and sets out on her own, as a reader you have to remember this fact and also the timeframe the book is written in. I loved the aunts in the book. Bee never questioned them until the end and she loved having them near her and taking care of them. So glad I picked up this one.
