My Never Ending List

Any Second

Any Second - Kevin Emerson
It was destiny the day they met but the circumstances of that day, were not ideal. There’s a darkness that shadows them, the day that they met and they can’t seem to shake it. I wanted them to talk, I mean really talk to each other because they both needed each other but it didn’t happen and the novel became dark and heavy.

Jacob had been chosen, he feels special, he’s been brainwashed. When he walks into the DOV with explosives strapped to his chest, he has one mission on his mind: to fulfill The Purpose. The Purpose that Gabriel gave him. Maya springs into action when Jacob tells her to move away. Maya’s hand quickly covers Jacob’s finger which was holding down the trigger, saving everyone’s life for at least a few minutes. The room erupts into a panic as calls are made to 911 and individuals rush out of the door, yet Maya stands holding onto Jacobs hand.

Fast forward almost one year, Jacob has taken back his given name of Eli and he has learned more about the individual Gabriel who had given him The Purpose, and had told him that he was a soldier. This man was the individual who had abducted him. Jacob is finally allowed to attend school, a school where Maya attends which brings back the ghosts of that day at the DOV. It’s a day that they both can’t seem to shake, a day that changed them both.

After everything that Eli has been through, I was surprised at the direction the novel continued to go. Since being rescued from his abductor, I would have thought that someone would have been keeping a closer eye on him but as the read, his story continued to spin out of control. Maya can’t move past the day that she met Eli, the day that she feels changed her life. It’s a deep read, a novel where every turn of the page, I hoped someone would step in.
