Kristina’s life was slipping away. She never meant for it to happen but the ride was just so intense she just couldn’t jump off. It started off so slowly that Kristina didn’t see the dangers that lied ahead. After visiting her father, Kristina comes back home a different person. This trip shatters Kristina’s life. Crank….meth….ice…whatever name you want to call this highly addictive drug has wound his tentacles around Kristina and pulled her under. After taking crank, Bree immerges and Kristina goes into hiding. Bree, this fearless, unshakeable force has an unhealthy thirst while Kristina, the friendly popular girl hides letting Bree take over Kristen’s life. Kristina’s new life begins to take shape: pernicious behavior, lies, living for the next hit, new friends and deceiving the old ones, disrespect and did I mention lies. Bree emerges like a cobra ready to strike and Kristina is shhhed until Bree’s need is fulfilled and she is settled - like a child and its tantrums. The issues just escalate as Bree needs more and Kristina lies in the back listening to Bree and her needs. Something has to give ………will it be Kristina or Bree that has to walk away from this nightmare?
Written in concrete poem, the rhythm of each of the poems is so unique. The emotions are real and powerful in some of the poems that they just scream out to you while others weep and beg for help. I didn’t realize that Kristina was based on events that happened with the author’s own daughter until after reading the book, what a powerful read. Although the poems don’t take up the entire page, by the time you read the poem, put the emotions and reflection into it, it feels like the whole page is filled with words.
"How could I explain gut-wrenching insights to someone so lacking vision?"
