My Never Ending List

Arnie loved being a doughnut....until he knew what a doughnut was.

Arnie the Doughnut - Laurie Keller

Arnie is just what he wanted to be…..a chocolate sprinkled doughnut. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all were like Arnie and were proud of who we are? Arnie takes us through his birth: how he was cut into a ring, deep fried, cooled, iced, sprinkled and named with some fun photos and comments. Arnie tries to talk it up with some of the other donuts in bakery as we meet some of the other delicious treats waiting to be sold at the bakery.  As the bakery opens, Arnie anxiously waits to be bought, he wants to know who “will choose me?”  As Mr. Bing selects Arnie, Arnie wonders what his life will be like living with Mr. Bing.  As Arnie travels home, Arnie is grateful for the nice napkin in the paper sack as it makes the ride easier, it is this pleasant outlook on life that has you loving Arnie from the first page.  As Mr. Bing places Arnie on a plate, his outlook is still happy and pleasant until he sees that he is being dropped into his mouth!  Arnie shouts and what transpires next is a rude awakening for Arnie.  Arnie feels that he needs to warn everyone at the bakery of their fate when they leave the bakery doors so Arnie makes a phone call to the bakery to talk to the baker which leaves Arnie crushed.  As far as Arnie and Mr. Bing’s relationship, the two have to figure out something that Arnie is good at so he can stay with Mr. Bing.  They each come up with different ideas, which are comical to read about and the pictures are excellent.  This is an excellent book and I truly enjoyed it.  Lots of side reading in the margins to go with the pictures besides the main text and the illustrations are really good.  A creative story that leaves a smile on your face.
