You’ve been acquitted of a murder, so what do you do? If you were like most people you move forward and put the case behind you but then again, you are not Kat McCall. Kat woke up one morning to find that her older sister had been murdered, the person who was legally responsible for her since their parent’s accident that claimed their lives. Kat was the prime suspect in the murder but she was found innocent by a jury. Living in Liberty was difficult as not everyone agreed with the verdict but that is what you get with small time living so Kat had to move and now she is a successful businesswoman. Kat has decided that after ten years she needs to go back to Liberty to find justice for Sara and find out exactly what happened that night and find out exactly who the killer was. As Kat arrives in Liberty, the tension fills the air and hostility surrounds her like a net. Everywhere she goes, eyes glare at her and whispers fill the air. People are not quiet about their comments either and Kat knows exactly how the town people feel about her arrival. Kat wants to set up one of her businesses in the small town but things are not shaping up as she had hoped. One let down after another has her jumping through hoops wondering if this is all worth it. Moving back to the house of the incident shakes things up but Kat realizes that she needs to push forward for Sara’s sake. The new law enforcement is looking pretty good in Kat’s eyes and things get heated up pretty quickly when Kat’s attention should really be on the case. Digging up dirt that is over ten years old and riling folks whose lives have moved on is like walking across hot coals. The coals get lit, their adrenaline gets pumped and eventually someone is going to get burned. Kat attention is on everyone or anyone who might have been on the scene, finger pointing and allegations are thrown, just when you think you have it solved, think again!
I enjoyed the way the chapters are set with the present day and then alternating to flashing back to ten years ago when the murder was taking place. As you read, you are seeing the murder materialize right before your eyes with a whole cast of characters with lots of different motives. Kat had to live with most of the town talking behind her back and that evil has to hurt yet she keeps moving forward as she tries to help bring justice. The chapters are short in the book and it is a quick read but one that will have you thinking.
