My Never Ending List

Fell in love with the cover and found a great author.

If He Had Been with Me - Laura Nowlin

They were childhood friends whose comfort level was something we all would be jealous of. Their contentment began because there were so many similarities between Finn and Autumn starting with their birth which was one week apart, they lived right next door to each other and their mothers had been best friends since childhood. It was almost like it was destiny.  Finn and Autumn did everything together and no one thought any different.  It was during middle school that things started to change in their relationship.  If they had been the same gender perhaps things might have turned out differently but that is only my prediction nevertheless, it was an innocent act that caused the two to drift apart.  Perhaps if they could have communicated better things might have taken a different path but as they both found new friends and cliques to hang with, in the back of their minds it always floated back to each other. They had decided they had split in two:  their side and our side which was so hard after spending so many years as Finn and Autumn. Finn was the popular one and Autumn had the drama.  Sometimes Autumn’s drama was so thick that she had to lean on Finn for support but never enough to cross the line and go to his side.   As Finn goes through some rough issues, you feel Autumn bearing the burden of Finn’s pain even though she has a boyfriend for whom she is supposed to be daunting on and other friends she is supposed to be caring for. The same holds true for Finn as Autumn deals with the drama of her own life plus the drama of her friends.  Finn is so caring, supportive and takes charge and helps Autumn deal with what gets thrown at her. The mother’s were at a loss for words at the breakup for the duo and when the families got , Finn and Autumn were not the same as before but they maintained their distant friendship. It is when things get so muddled that they find the time to talk, to say what has been on their minds.  It is then that Finn and Autumn finally learn what happened so long ago and decide who is on what side.
I had goose bumps while reading this book as there was some great touching that I was not expecting. Their relationship was so close and you had no idea what caused them to drift apart until almost the end of the book.  There could have been some word throwing and some anger issues because they knew so much about each other but something special was harboring inside them as their thoughts kept coming back to each other in the most interesting ways throughout the book.  Autumn’s circle of friends made the book more interesting as I wondered if the pressure to stay together created more drama or the events in life did that.  The pace of the book was excellent as we tracked their entire high school years but I did not feel rushed. So much drama in their families life and in school yet they still had each other somewhere. Thanks for not revealing the main parts of the book until the end, there was enough going on in the book that it was nice to have something at the end to wrap it all up.
Mature readers only: sexual content
" This book is a treasure: I did not suspect it would be so good when I picked it up, but now I can feel the printed words seeping through my skin and into my veins, rushing to my heart and marking it forever. I want to savor this wonder, this happening of loving a book and reading it for the first time, because the first time is always the best, and I will never read this book for the first time again."
