It’s a way of control and also a fresh way of life. For teen Kyla, her life is just beginning as she emerges from the hospital at the age of sixteen. Learning what dangers surround her, what relationships are and other life important lessons, it is although she is an infant emerging through life on the fast trek. Her previous life is now void and vanished, erased or so the government hoped, Kyla is now earmarked a Slated. On her wrist she wears a Levo to keep her emotions on track and also to track her movements. Why did the government erase her mind and give her a clean slate? This question should not be on Kyla mind but Dr. Lysander knew Kyla was different. It is Dr. Lysander, the mastermind behind Slating who is Kyla’s doctor, who is trying to figure out what makes Kyla so unique. As Kyla adjusts to her new life with her adopted family, she must keep constant watch on her Levo bracelet as too low of a reading and her life will cease, so this bracelet and its data consume her. As she attends a group meeting with other Slated individuals, she meets Ben and an instant attraction occurs. This friendship gives Kyla someone to talk to about the new world she is contending with as Ben and her sister are both Slated individuals but yet so different. While most Slated individuals are behind in their schooling, Kyla exceeds. Finding her place at school among the normal students is a challenge, as discrimination for who she is follows her there. At night, when she is able to close her eyes, it is the dreams that plague her and cause her to cry out. As she tries to piece these fragments together with the current images in the life, the picture becomes cloudier before it becomes clearer. She has no one to turn to, or does she? The whole purpose behind the Slated individuals was to give teen terrorists a second chance but Kyla believes in something else.
What a great first novel by Teri. I was hooked in the first chapter and loved the character of Kyla. As Kyla has these triggers, they bring up memories and you get a glimpse of her history. A little bit is added each time and as it was revealed I was inching my way forward waiting for more. Feed me!! I was reading so fast sometimes, I had to reread as I know I missed something and I didn’t want that. Her coping strategies and her relationship, good and bad in the book made you feel connected to every aspect of her life. Oh, her parents. Her mom, I thought she was cold but she came around but the dad…..something is up there. Kyla and Ben’s relationship was right on. It started out a good friendship and then it started to get a bit deeper and then….cliffhanger. Thank you very much for the missing individuals, the friendships, the Lorders, the secret meetings, for now, its onto book 2 . I wish I could run, I could use that release right now.
