3.5 stars I don't know what the hype over this book is all about. The New York Times says this book can be a "life changing" but I don't think my life will be changing because of this book. It did have its moments and I thought it was different to have Death be my narrator and describe some scenes as colors but other parts of the book were blah. I really thought the character of Liesel was too boring for me and I rushed through some her parts in the book as I wanted to see the world around her because that is what the author described so wonderfully to me. Markus did a wonderful job in choice of words and I think I continued to read the book as I wanted to know what happened to the other characters. Her stepfather was a man who was conflicted as he wanted to belong to society but also loved mankind and Markus did a great job describing the turmoil that Hans struggled with throughout the book. Her stepmother was a fun character that I had to laugh at who acted tough (we all know someone who acts this way) but deep down inside is a softie. I would definitely read another book by Markus as I felt that I was living on Death's shoulder.
