Welcome to the world of pixies. Did I say “pixies”? This is my first experience with pixies and I was hesitating at first whether to read about them since this opens up a new world to me but I think I just might like this new experience. When I first opened up the book, I was shocked to learn that Zara’s mother has shipped her off to her grandmother’s. Zara has not been herself since her stepfather’s death and her mother thinks this new change of scenery might do her some good and get her back on track. I had to stop and think, sure…..shipping your child off to her grandmothers after something so dramatic and making her go to a new school with new friends in a totally different environment is going to be good for her? Who need the therapy, really? Well, I love the grandmother and after reading a couple chapters, I see that perhaps Zara is probably better off with her. She seems like the cookie-baking, late-night-talking grandma everyone needs to have at their fingertips. When Zara starts to go to school, she realizes that the town knows more about her past and that Zara’s future is about to get rocky. Zara makes a few friends and she realizes that not everyone is what they seem to be. I like that Zara gets all emotional about what is happening and doesn’t let it go to her head- it makes her seem real and not snooty about her past/future. There are parts in the book that I felt were subtle, like when her car got stuck in the snow and Zara being a runner. The phobias were fun to read about also. The action was nonstop and I enjoyed the ending. I look forward to reading the next book about Zara and hopefully her grandmother.
