My Never Ending List

Before I Fall

Before I Fall - Lauren Oliver "So many things become beautiful when you really look."This is Samantha’s realization when she has to relive February 12th over7 times because somehow she can’t seem to untangle the mystery of her death. But what Samantha sees when she has to wake up to this Groundhog Day kind of world is that she was not really living the life SHE wanted to live. She thought she had it all; the family, the friends, and the opportunity to do whatever she set her mind to do but after waking up in her own Bill Murray world, this was not her life. Somehow she had to make things right, but how? Can Samantha go against everything she knows or change who she really is to make things right? Who is Samantha really? This book really gets to the matter of who an individual really is: is a person strong enough to stand on their own two feet or do they go along with the crowd to fit in or can they be a bit of both? As I mentioned before it reminds me of Groundhog Day with Bill Murray only this is about a teenager who needs to get herself figured out and realize her own potential. Reading along in the book, I thought 7 days was a bit long and with Samantha, I was getting frustrated when her alarm clock went off each morning and thought, “Come on girl! Get it right, figure this out and quit playing around- these are people lives.” There are mentions of sex and drugs so this book needs to be for mature teens but the message is good and the plot says a lot. If anything, teens reading this might come away with something to think about- whose life am I really leading
