Ok, I loved the cover of this book and that is why it found its way into my arms. How can you not love this dark and mysterious cover and then the title, The Shadow Society? I was intrigued to read about Darcy and how she could be from two different worlds and that these two worlds had something to do with the Great Chicago Fire. Darcy doesn’t remember her past so it would take some time for her to understand her part and I was willing to spend some time with her understanding what exactly happened to her and her life. Boy, was I in for an awakening. First, I haven’t read much about alternate dimensions and like Darcy, I was a bit confused but the author did a great job laying everything out for us and Darcy’s life was unraveling like a spool of thread. Darcy life began as a shadow (yes, the black image we all project in sunlight) and lived in the Shadow Society. She had amazing talents but she just did not exercise them for reason you will have to read on your own and later she entered the world of us, humans. Darcy lived as a human but things started to change for Darcy and a few individuals began to notice her. The humans and the Shadow Society were not on the best of terms because of past history, so fear was always on everyone’s mind. As the shadows approach Darcy and feed her information of what her past was about, Darcy tries to cling onto what she feels is best for her and the future. For Darcy, she is now able to live in both worlds but would she be able to handle the pressure? She thought she wanted to bring justice but exactly what is “justice?” After reading this book, I will look at shadows differently. Darcy was a tough girl who wanted to do the best thing but she was torn in to many directions. Between foster families and schools, she wanted to believe that it would get better so she always had hope, which is what I liked about her. The book was slow in parts but not enough for me to quit. I think it was just the details that bogged me down but once the pieces were put into place the ball was rolling and I really enjoyed the book. Romance, suspense, friendship, adventure, and drama rounded out this book.
