My Never Ending List

Lunch time

A Sudden Light: A Novel - Garth Stein

The patrons are all huddled over their sandwiches, the aroma inside this sandwich shop is all too familiar. As you swing open the door, you are relaxed yet excited for what awaits you. As I headed for a booth, I spread out my sandwich and opened my book, A Sudden Light which I started last night. I have been hauling this novel along all morning as I ran errands.

" That isn't her, Dad," my father said.

"Sometimes I hear music."

"Goddamn it, Dad!" my dad barked. He stood up quickly and knocked over his chair. "There is no music! There is no dancing! She's dead Dad. She's been dead a very long time. And she's not coming back, and her ghost isn't here, and she doesn't dance for you, and she doesn't play Billie Holiday records on the record player. She's dead!"

I wanted to yell. I wanted to break the silence that surrounded me. The emotions and anguish that were unleashed in those words were enormous. What do you do? I couldn't close the book, I had come this far. Looking at my sandwich, I decided it was time to eat.
