Balloons Over Broadway The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Parade

Balloons over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Parade (Bank Street College of Education Flora Stieglitz Straus Award (Awards)) - Melissa Sweet

Who doesn’t love a parade?   So what is the story behind those floats that are in Macy’s Parade? If you grab this fact-filled picture book by Melissa Sweet you will be so educated. Make sure you share this knowledge when you are watching The Macy’s Parade, as others will be surprised you have that behind-the-scene information. The story begins with Tony Sarg, who at the age of six was a marionette man. As an adult he moved to NYC and performed on Broadway. Macy’s heard of his puppets and asked him to put together a holiday display for their windows. Well received, Macy’s then wanted to do something special for their immigrant employees who missed their holiday traditions of music and dancing so they commissioned Tony to help with a parade.  Accompanying live animals, using costumes and floats the parade was a success but this was only the beginning.   Things started to expand each year, replacing the animals, making the puppets larger and then finally replacing them altogether. The book explains the challenges and the successes through the passing of time. Great, lively illustrations with detailed- draw sketches accompany some of the texts. Fantastic book to check out and learn out trivia.
