This is my favorite saying, my kids know it by heart. Whenever we attempt something and it doesn't turn out or whenever we fail, I tell them " You live and you learn." It's what life is all about and when you quit attempting or quit learning, you are not experiencing life.
After reflecting on my reading goal for 2014, I really did live and learn. I learn never to tackle that goal again. I only had one goal for this past year and I have failed miserably. I knew I was failing as the year progressed and after September, I just quit keeping track as I knew I was doomed. My goal for the year was to reduce my TBR pile. In January, my TBR pile was at a mite 1,168 books. This number went up slightly every month until the summer where I don't know what happened but the numbers then skyrocketed. I try to rationalize my growing pile, to justify my obsession, just for myself not anyone else as I really want to read these books but when I look at the numbers, I cringe. So what is my rationale?
1. I read a lot of books which were not on my TBR pile.
2. I just can't say no to a good review, cover or blog post - so I add the book, I'll
read it later.
3. I volunteer at the library and I have no control, really no control - therefore I walk
out of the library with a small stack of book almost every week. See #1
4. I am well- rounded, I read a variety of genres, so my TBR pile has an
assortment of genres. So many to chose from.
5. Authors.... the authors. The authors are producing more exceptional novels
each year and the new indie writers, outstanding.
So, drum roll please....I am ending the year with an astonishing number of 1,724 books on my TBR pile. Pretty impressive, huh? Oh, I did read 278 books this year, that's 69,489 pages which is more than 2013 so I am pleased with my numbers this year. I also need to remember that these are just numbers, just like my age and my weight and it's also a great list to help me keep myself organized.
