How To Be a Lion

How To Be a Lion - Ed Vere
So, what does a lion do, exactly? Typically, a lion is fierce and eats prey BUT you haven’t met Leonard. Leonard is not your typical lion. Leonard likes the great outdoors and he likes words. He likes to put words together and creates poems. When Duck first meets Leonard, he is scared of Leonard but then the two of them create a unique friendship. Leonard and Marianne play together, relax together, and create poems together. A pride of lions come upon Leonard and Marianne and remark that they have heard of Leonard and his strange behavior. The pride wants Leonard to eat Marianne but the two of them must come up with plan to show the pride why Leonard doesn’t.

I really enjoyed the illustrations in this children’s book. I liked the simplicity of the drawings and colors used on the pages. Something about the illustrations set the tone for the novel for me. It wasn’t a book that screamed colors and chaos but rather a soothing and composed tone. There were a few difficult words in this book but I liked that, as I felt that this book shouldn’t be one that is raced through but one where time is spent reading it and understanding the author’s purpose. Definitely a cute book about a unique lion who forms an exceptional friendship.
