My Never Ending List

100 Trillion Good Bacteria Living in the Human Body (and other scientific facts)

100 Trillion Good Bacteria Living in the Human Body (The Big Countdown) - Paul Rockett, Mark Ruffle
I don’t know why I haven’t heard of this book before. It was published in 2014 and it wasn’t until recently that I heard about it. I checked it out at the library and after looking at it, I am really impressed. If you like facts, if you like numbers, if science interests you at all or if you like learning interesting and mind-blowing information about your body, this child’s book is for you. As a substitute teacher, I like to tell students in my various classrooms interesting facts about different subject matters. I think it grabs their attention and if anything, they might just learn something new that day.

This book reads like a science book so that might turn you off but the information that is packed inside is exciting and fun. This book is concentrated on information about your body. There are other books in this series which now I am definitely going to have to check out. I hope they will be just as interesting and educational as this one is. There are 29 pages of scientific data in this book and the pages are full. There are fun, colorful illustrations on each page. These are not realistic photos but they are drawings that resemble the subject matter. The text is bold enough to read and there are plenty of text headings on the pages to break the writing up. I liked all the different colors on the pages as it broke up the content and I thought some of the illustrations were wonderfully done.

So, what will you learn? Some of the things you will learn about is skin, blood, digestion, your brain, your heart, bacteria, bones, muscles, and hair. I thought it interesting that: Your head has 100,000 hair follicles and your body has a total of 5,000,000. Also, it really depends on your hair color as to the actual number of strands of hair on your head. How about there is 22 square feet of skin covering the average human body. Did you know your blood travels 60,000 miles a day? I liked how they described the different components of blood and their functions. There were some interesting facts about digestion including poo that I know kids will find fascinating but I won’t spoil too much of the book for you. It’s a pretty cool and fascinating book, you should check into it.
