Dodgers

Dodgers: A Novel - Bill Beverly

As I began to read this novel, I was having a difficult time wrapping my head around the language and the author’s writing. The text felt chopping and I was close to abandoning this novel. The further I read, the story began to take shape and I was glad that I hadn’t abandoned it. I loved the way that the author had me along for the ride with these young men as they tested their boundaries. These were four young men who were out to prove themselves, stuck together in a vehicle, doing a job that was assigned to them.

They all had a job to do regarding the house. It was their job to make sure that the house was ran securely and properly, for it was their livelihood and their activity was far from legal. So what happened? You can be the judge of that but I think it was a combination of factors that changed the house. For what happens next, changes the lives of many of the individuals forever. East accepts a new assignment that was offered to him and he leaves with three other men to do a hit in another state. This begins an interesting journey as the young men have to leave their true identities behind and set off to do this assignment. With no cell phones and with limited cash, these young men have assumed new identities. Two of the boys are brothers and this identity does not stay behind as it should. There is the struggle of power, the struggle for completing this assignment and the struggle to maintain control of the situation, these conflicts accompanying them on the trip. It is all this tension plus the struggles of fitting into their new surroundings that these young men have to maintain to exist without detection. If only this was a perfect world and everything worked out as it should would these young men be successful and find their way back home but the boys soon realize that one slip-up leads into another and their hit is not going as planned. I loved the tension inside this novel, the way you could feel it building and the way each character dealt with it, in their own way. I was surprised at how well I enjoyed this novel. I wouldn’t call it a suspenseful novel or a thriller, but it was one that I really enjoyed.
