My Never Ending List

One Crazy Summer

One Crazy Summer - Rita Williams-Garcia I was waiting for this book to deliver but it never did for me. With all the awards on the front and the whole list of awards and honors on the back of the book, I was waiting fireworks and a fantastic read but I was left disappointed. Who really hands out these awards?Yes, it was a crazy summer for Delphine as she travels across the country with her two sisters Fern and Vonetta to visit the mother who skipped out on them. Perhaps they will learn why she bailed out on them and never looked back. Perhaps this will help Delphine and she can move on but remember Delphine is only eleven and has heard enough about her mother from her dad and Big Ma. But no, after meeting her mother, she realizes the picture she has painted seems to be true. But why? Can they handle living with her all summer when all she wants to do kick them out of the house so she can do work? This is where the book gets so confusing. Why does the father make the children stay with the mother when they know nothing about the mother? Don't they check up on the children all summer? Why doesn't the author give the reader some background information about the Black Panthers? I realize in the book a lot of doors open up and things are revealed and to some readers that makes a good book but to others - that leaves questions. I guess I am the question person. I wanted more, I expected more. Sure there was this bond with the sisters, I felt that but not enough to gets that many awards. Sorry.
