My Never Ending List

Monument 14: Sky on Fire

Sky on Fire - Emmy Laybourne I’m still impressed by how these kids handle themselves under such extreme conditions. This novel takes off right where the last one left off with a group of the kids heading out to the Denver International Airport and the rest of them holed up in the Greenway department store in Monument, CO. So what caused the split? Survival. There was an injury and they thought their best chance for medical treatment was the airport. Once they get to the airport, they will send back help, if they make it. Before leaving on their trip, they have discovered that their blood types react differently with the chemical compound that has been released in the air so not everyone can survive the trip outside the stores confines, so the group splits up. As one group travels to the airport, they are met with some resistance and the trip is anything but easy. I enjoyed the author’s attention to detail as she described the scenes and the interactions between the characters as they tried to make their way to the airport. I would have enjoyed this part of the book to have been longer as it would have added more suspense and excitement to the journey playing out. The other children left at the store have their own drama to contend with. You would think that staying at the store would have been the best choice since they had everything secure and they knew their surrounding but with half the people gone and it still being prime real estate, things get out-of-hand rather quickly. What will happen to the children and as they split up, I had to ask myself, will they ever see each other again and under what circumstances?I had to ask myself over and over again as I read the book, what I would have done in the situation as both a child and the resistant individuals as they encountered each situation. It really made me think a couple times as there were times I was thinking, “what are you doing?!?!!!””AHHH” I just couldn’t believe after everything they had been through in book one, they did something unthinkable (at least I thought so) but then I remembered they were kids. I enjoyed this second book almost as much as the first except I believe it was too wrapped up. The middle was too short and the ending was just there. It was like a cute little package all nice and neat with a cute bow on it. It’s not like I wanted a cliffhanger, a massacre, a big family reunion or a big major destruction, I just wanted care for it. It was a great book but I wanted more. Mature readers as there is some sexual content.
